El Trenet from Alicante to Denia
History
The trenet (also known as the tram) was originally built between Alicante and Altea in 1914, and was extended later in 1918 to Denia (Trenet Alicante-Denia). This main line was extended by a smaller line in 2003 that runs from the Postiguet beach in Alicante to El Campello (see maps, 'plano de la red').
A Tour of the Coast
Having over 40 stops along the coast, taking the trenet from Alicante to Denia (or vice versa!) is a relaxing way to take in the scenery.
Buy a ticket and hop on board to Denia or Altea and enjoy the ride. At the other end you can get out, enjoy the beaches of La Marina Alta the both Altea and Denia have to offer, have a nice lunch and take the train back to Alicante to enjoy the warm nightlife that Alicante has to offer.
Naturally, this is also a great way to enjoy Alicante if you happen to be living in or visiting in one of the northern stops.
Rates and Hours
The rates and hours of operations change depending on the season, so it is best to check out the official website to get the most current information: website, tel. 965 262 233.
On the website, click 'English', then 'Lines' and choose 'Tram'. At the time of publishing, the English website for the tram was not complete. If you are looking for pricing information, click on 'tarifas', and note that there is a map available for download (see first paragraph).
The Future
In the future, the TRAM service will feed more areas of the province, including the downtown area, the central market, hospitals, the university and the sea front in the capital city of Alicante (see map, in Spanish), and it connect the capital with Benidorm and Altea.
The design of the project will be completed in 2007 and has an overall budget of more than 500 million euros.
